How Advising Works

CNAS Advising

From orientation to graduation, Academic Advisors play a crucial role in helping you achieve your degree goals.  We are committed to offering you academic guidance every step of the way throughout your undergraduate career.  CNAS UAAC offers hybrid appointment options and general drop-in advising in person through our General Undergraduate Advising Check-In's (GUAC) option.  Please review the information below to learn more about how CNAS academic advising works.

  • Who to meet with?
    Who to meet with?
    • Upon admission to UCR, students are assigned an advisor
    • You can find your assigned advisor via your Student Profile on Rweb and
    • You can find your assigned advisor via your CNAS Major page 
    • It is highly recommended you schedule an appointment with your assigned advisor, scheduling with an alternate advisor may result in a cancellation. 
    • You will be able to schedule an appointment with your assigned advisor via our advising portal: MyAdvising.ucr.edu
    • You can also meet for a general drop-in advising in person through our General Undergraduate Advising Check-In's (GUAC) option.
  • Advising Appointments
    Advising Appointments
    • Scheduling appointment: When you are viewing your assigned advisors availability, choose an available advising slot on myadvising.ucr.edu. These advising sessions can be 10-20 minute sessions and you can schedule them in advance or the same day if slots are available. You will also be able to view or schedule an appointment 10 days in advance. Please note, if you do not see advisor availability posted, this could mean they are fully booked up to the 10 day viewing window. If you need assistance, please attend the GUAC advising hours or email your assigned advisor.
    • Availability: You can view your advisors posted availability through myadvising.ucr.edu. Please check whether the advising appointment you are looking for is available online or in – person and choose the option that you would prefer. 
      • For in-person appointments, check in at the CNAS Advising Center front window at 1223 Pierce Hall no more than 5 minutes prior to the start of your appointment. After checking in at the front window, wait in the lobby for your advisor to call your name and they will guide you to their office. 
      • Online appointments: Log into myadvising.ucr.edu no more than 5 minutes before your scheduled appointment and click on “Enter Online Appointment”. This will take you to the advisors virtual waiting room and they will see you shorty. 
    • If you are going to be late or need to cancel the appointment, please call the Advising Center at 951-827-7294. Please note, if you are 10 minutes late, your appointment will be canceled and you will need to reschedule.
  • General Undergrad Advising Check-Ins (GUAC)

    General Undergrad Advising Check-Ins (GUAC)
    • Meant for quick, general questions (5-10 minutes).
    • No need to schedule an appointment with your assigned advisor.
    • Suitable for inquiries about general degree requirements, academic policies, and other academic concerns.
    • GUAC provides convenient and efficient support to address your questions.
  • Emails
    Emails
    Emailing your assigned advisor:
    In addition to GUAC advising hours, email is one of the many ways you can receive assistance for general questions. For more in depth questions and course planning, it is highly encouraged you schedule an appointment. 
    • When you email your advisor, always use your full name (and/or preferred name) and student SID number. Without this information, this may delay a response to your email as the advisor will need to email you to acquire the right information. 
    • Once you have emailed your advisor, please allow them 2-3 business days to respond to your email. During peak advising times, such as beginning of the quarter and registration, please allow 3-4 business days for a response. Please note business hours are Monday – Friday  8am-5pm and does not include holidays or weekends.
