Data has become ubiquitous in everyday life, impacting every profession, from entry-level office workers to CEOs, from team coaches to general managers,

from accountants to CFOs. Businesses now have data available to them at a scale that is historically unprecedented; harnessing this data for insight on what customers want provides them with a competitive advantage. Traditional companies (Ford, Walmart, General Electric, etc.) today pride themselves as being transformed to big-data businesses. Furthermore, data permeates all aspects of science, engineering, and other academic disciplines.

The field of Data Science has recently emerged as a new academic discipline studying data itself. Data Science lies at the intersection of Computer Science and Statistics. By creating a Data Science undergraduate degree we aim to educate the future data scientists and leaders in this field, by building knowledge bottom-up, covering both essential knowledge from Computer Science (in managing data) and Statistics (in analyzing data), and integrating this knowledge with applications to other domains and to real-life problems. The Data Science major provides a comprehensive program studying how data can be collected, transformed, analyzed, and used to solve problems across academic disciplines and applications.

  • Change of Major Criteria for Data Science
    Students must be in Good Academic Standing at the time the Change of Major Petition is filed 2.0 quarter, cumulative, and upper-division GPA. In addition, no less than a C– in any STAT, MATH, Science, and Engineering courses. Transfer students must be DTSC eligible at the point of admission to UCR Degree program must be completed without exceeding 216 earned units. 

    Freshman (up to 44.9 units)

    Sophomore (45 - 89.9  units)

    Junior (90 - 134.9 units)

    Senior (135 units & above)

    Completion of...

    • ENGL001A with a grade of “C” or better and completion of the following with at least 2.70 GPA:
      • CS010A
      • CS010B
      • MATH009A or 09HA

    Completion of...

    • ENGL001A with a grade of “C” or better, and completion of the following with at least 2.70 GPA:
      • CS010A
      • CS010B
      • MATH009A or 09HA
      • MATH009B or 09HB
      • MATH009C or 09HC

    Completion of...

    • ENGL001A & ENGL001B with a grade of “C” or better, and completion of the following with at least 2.70 GPA:
      • CS010A
      • CS010B
      • CS010C
      • MATH011/CS011
      • MATH009A or 09HA
      • MATH009B or 09HB
      • MATH009C or 09HC
      • One of MATH031 or MATH010A

    Changing to the Data Science (DTSC) major at senior level (greater than or equal to 135 units) is not allowed

    To declare a minor, students must: be in good academic standing (quarter and cumulative GPAs at 2.0 and above); complete 2 upper-division courses required for the minor with a C or better; and be able to complete both your major and minor within the 216 unit maximum.  *AP/IB units or transfer units earned prior to graduating high school are excluded when determining 216 unit maximum.   Minors must be declared no later than 2 quarters prior to a student's expected graduation term.   A minimum of 16 upper-division units must be unique to the minor; additional upper-division units beyond those unique 16 may also be used toward major requirements if applicable.

    Data Science Minor requirements

    The following are the requirements for a minor in Data Science:

    • Must complete 2 upper-division minor courses with C or higher (strongly recommended: complete lower-div requirements); first two upper-division minor courses cannot be in-progress
    • Cumulative, minor, & upper-div major GPA’s must be 2.00 or higher
    • All required minor courses must be listed on the minor form
    • CS010A and CS010B can be used in lieu of CS009A and CS009B, respectively
    • MATH009ABC series is required to enroll in STAT156A
    • Minor must be declared at least two terms prior to graduation term
    • Attempting to initiate the minor declaration in last year can be problematic
    • Please carefully review upper-division STAT and CS courses for prerequisites.  Listed prerequisites will need to be taken in a timely manner in order to take Data Science minor upper-division requirements
    • Please keep in mind that some STAT and CS upper-div courses are offered only once a year.  Be sure to review the Schedule of CS and STAT Course Offerings listed above

Data Science Academic Advisors

Data Science Lead Faculty Advisor

A Lead Faculty Advisor is assigned for each major.  Faculty advisors are available to assist students with guidance regarding graduate or professional school, opportunities to participate in research, independent study, or internships.  Faculty advisors also may provide students with advice and mentoring regarding career goals.
