Barry Goldwater Scholarship - $7,500
Barry Goldwater Scholarship 2019

The Barry Goldwater Scholarship seeks to fund $7,500 to promising undergraduate researchers.  This award is open to sophomores & juniors.  Please encourage STEM undergraduate researchers to come to an information session to learn more about this opportunity.

Student Engagement provides mentorship and application preparation support to eligible students.  Four undergraduates can be endorsed for this award, this year the foundation has added one additional endorsement slot for a transfer student.  Applying for an award of this caliber provides a good learning opportunity for students to prepare for other prestigious awards.  Since 2013, 11 UCR students have won this award, including 3 this past year!  UCR Goldwater scholars have gone on to win NSF GRFPs, Fulbrights, Gates Cambridge Scholarships, and have been named finalists for Marshall scholarships.   Please help us identify the next Goldwater Scholars!

FIELDS Undergraduate Research Internships at UC Riverside (Fellowships & Internships in Extremely Large Data Sets)
JPL UCR Internship

Successful careers today depend on having the skills to understand, analyze, and extract information from large amounts of data. The NASA MIRO FIELDS Program is proud to offer a number of research internships for UC Riverside undergraduate students to conduct research in fields involving data analysis, processing, or visualization. Collaboratively developed by UCR and NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), the FIELDS program aims to train the next generation of scientists and engineers in large-scale data analysis and visualization. As a part of this internship program, selected undergraduate students will conduct research at a UCR (or NASA) laboratory under the supervision of a mentor for one year. The interns will receive professional training to advance their future careers. Attempts will also be made to provide the interns with opportunities to get involved with the current NASA programs. Students enrolled in this program will receive up to $3,000 per academic year.

Qualified candidates are expected to major in a STEM (i.e., science, technology, engineering, and math) field, although candidates from other fields may also be considered in exceptional circumstances. Underrepresented minorities are strongly encouraged to apply.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Interns are expected to conduct research in collaboration with a UC Riverside faculty member and/or a JPL scientist. A letter from a potential mentor at UCR is required for the application
  • Prepared to conduct research in an area involving intensive use of data
  • GPA 3.0 or above (3.5 preferred)
  • Preferably enrolled in the 2nd or 3rd year of undergraduate studies
  • Not currently receiving financial aid or another scholarship at UC Riverside

Global Food Initiative Coffee Hours

Fellows from the Carbon Neutrality Initiative (CNI) and the Global Food Initiative (GFI), cordially invite UCR undergraduate students to their upcoming coffee hour on Feb. 11th at 1:00 pm on HUB 269.

The CNI and GFI fellowships were established by UCOP in 2015 as a way to encourage student involvement in meeting UC sustainable commitments. Both fellowships focus around student-led projects aimed at furthering the advances of the UC policies. This is a great opportunity for students interested in sustainability/environmentalism to be able to make their ideas happen and get involved.

Awarded fellows receive a stipend upwards of $3,000 for student-led projects aimed to further advance UCR’s commitment to health and sustainability on campus. The coffee hour is a good time for students to both learn about the on-going projects as well as to come with questions about the initiatives and application process. The application for next year's fellows should be opening sometime in the spring, so we want to give students time to come up with a project and find mentors.

Bridging the Gap from Education to Employment (BGEE) Project at UC Riverside
UIA BGEE

Bridging the Gap from Education to Employment (BGEE) is a project of the University Innovation Alliance (UIA), the leading national coalition of public research universities committed to increasing the number and diversity of college graduates in the United States.  The BGEE project is working to reimagine the college-to-career pathway for first-generation and low-income students.  The BGEE initiative is partnering with Parker Dewey to hire students as Micro-Interns who will contribute to this project on BGEE campuses.

During their Bridging the Gap from Education to Employment (BGEE) Gigs for Good micro-internship, students will serve as a regular member of UC Riverside’s BGEE campus team.  Micro-Interns will help develop new programs, resources, or services to support students on their career path.  BGEE Micro-Interns will receive a $1000 stipend for ~45 hours of work over the fall quarter.
