What To Expect at the CNAS UAAC

What to expect when visiting the CNAS Undergraduate Academic Advising Center

NOTE: All students are assigned, by their last name, to a single academic advisor who is an expert in their major as well as their academic record. To see the advisor's caseload please go to:

What are Drop-In Advising Sessions?

Drop-in Advising Sessions are quick and convenient sessions designed for students who need answers to quick advising questions such as “What do I take this quarter?” , “How do I add, drop, withdraw, or S/NC a class this quarter?”, “How do I add or drop a minor?” or “How do I readmit to the university?”.  These sessions may last for a few minutes up to a maximum of 15 minutes.  If your question requires more than 15 minutes your advisor may need to refer you to their next drop-in advising availability or to an academic advising appointment to ensure your questions are answered thoroughly and accurately.

When do I need to make and advising appointment instead of accessing my advisors drop-in advising sessions?

Unlike drop-in advising sessions, advising appointments are a maximum of 30 minutes per session.  These expanded sessions are reserved specifically for students with more complicated issues or requests.  Students who are working to begin exploring a new major, ready to declare a new major, need assistance with creating a Four-Year Course Plan, are requesting an exception to CNAS or major regulations and policies,  need assistance to improving academic achievement, or wish to discuss transition to a major housed in another college at UCR (transition advising) all need to make an appointment to ensure your advisor has sufficient time to thoroughly and accurately address all of your issues and concerns.

How do I sign in for a drop-in?

1. To access your advisor for a drop-in advising session,  please come to the CNAS UAAC and take a number from our “Take a Number” machine located in our lobby.  For the best service, please do not take a number more than 5 minutes before your advisor’s drop-in advising session begins .

2. Once you’ve taken a number, please take a seat in our lobby and wait for your number to be called by the receptionist on duty.  Your number will also be displayed on the “Take a Number” screen in our lobby.

3,  When your number has been called, please proceed to the receptionist window and make sure to have your Student ID card ready to expedite your check-in for service.

4. The receptionist will then ask which advisor you are here to see and whether it is for a drop-in advising session or an appointment as well as the reason for the visit.    The receptionist will use this information to sign you in for service and notify your advisor that you are waiting.

5. After you’ve been signed in, please have a seat and wait for your advisor to call you by name.  Please listen closely and if you must leave the lobby temporarily, please let the receptionist know that you’ll be returning so you don’t lose your spot in line.

6. Once your advisor calls you back to their office, your advising session will begin.

How to I access an advising appointment?

Students must schedule an appointment at least X days in advance, based on your advisor’s and your availability. Advising appointments are typically not available during the first week of the quarter and may be unavailable at other times during the term depending on advisor availability.  If student demand for services is unusually high, we may elect to cancel appointments converting them to drop-in sessions to serve more students more quickly.  Continuing UCR students can schedule an appointment on-line at myadvising.ucr.edu.   Students who are not currently attending UCR will need to call our office at (951) 827-7294 to schedule an appointment as they cannot access our on-line system.

How do I sign in for my apppointment?

When you have a scheduled appointment, please do not  take a number, instead go directly to the reception window when it is clear.  If there are other students waiting in line for reception service, please wait in line until the receptionist calls to the window.  The receptionist will check you in for your appointment up to 5 minutes before your appointment is scheduled to begin.  When you access the receptionist, please let her  know you have an appointment.  Please make sure to have your Student ID out and ready for the receptionist to check you in for your appointment, along with the name of your advisor and the reason for your visit.  The receptionist will use this information to sign you in for service and notify your advisor that you are waiting.

1. After the receptionist signs you in, please , have a seat and wait for your advisor to call you by name.  Please listen closely and if you must leave the lobby temporarily, please let the receptionist know that you’ll be returning so you don’t lose your spot in line.

2. Once your advisor calls you back to their office, your advising session will begin.

What If I don’t need to meet with an advisor, but I need to ask a quick question, pick up, or drop off paperwork?

If you are here for something other than a drop-in advising  or advising appointment session, please  take a number and wait for the receptionist to call your number.  The number will also be  displayed on the screen in our lobby.

Once the receptionist calls you to the window, we will be able to assist you with your question and/or paperwork.
